Time flies as the clock ticks along, I am astonished that it is almost a year since I last wrote a post here. My problem has been one of simply having too many games in-play and taking on some additional admin work for one of the correspondence chess clubs. The last part was probably a mistake as the club seems on its last legs and I wonder if the current officials are motivated enough to get stuck in and rebuild the club.
Anyway, today I got news that I have been placed into a Semi-Final section for Veterans World Cup 9. My qualification came from the preliminary group where some luck saw me secure equal first with SIM Darrell Nightingale. Receiving the pairing today means that I must focus hard if I am to make the most of this opportunity where title norms are on offer.
The new tournament starts on 30th July although 21 games have started today! One major problem I am finding is that many players are very fast to respond to moves, play extremely strongly with seemingly little thought or are just very good at anticipating moves. This is where the number of games you have is very important, I am now at around 38 games or 53 games with this latest tournament. Not very long ago I was back up towards 80 games which is far too many, no wonder I was dangerously close to the time limit in several games.
Over the next few days I will decide on my strategy for this new tournament, should I try something new, stick to my old favourites or adjust my game for each player?
