After much deliberation and various posts discussing how to proceed with my aim of attaining the IM title for Correspondence Chess, I have set myself some dates to measure my performance towards the IM title.
There are various ways to achieve this but the most likely for me is getting two IM Norms, this can be achieved by performing well against strong opposition in ICCF tournaments offering ‘norms’. Other methods of getting the IM title are to score well in World Championships, the ICCF World Cup or be nominated by your National Federation.
I have the following plan:
- 01/01/2019: Obtain and Retain a 2300 ELO rating with ICCF.
ICCF publishes ratings quarterly. Gaining points is difficult whilst a lost game can be very harmful, setting 16 months for this aim is reasonable.
- 01/01/2021: Achieve 1st IM Norm.
ICCF awards a title norm only in specific events where the players ratings meet certain criteria. It is possible to play in ‘Norm Events’ but for this you need to be 2300 ELO or higher.
- 31/12/2022: Qualify for the IM title.
For this I will need two or more master results in international title tournaments with a total of at least 24 games.
